Perranporth is all about its beach: a vast sweep of golden sand backed by dunes and framed by cliffs. It's a relaxed, sporty village popular with surfers, families and walkers.
Things to do in Perranporth
- Surf. The long, open beach has consistent waves and several surf schools for beginners.
- Chapel Rock. At low tide, walk out to this rock with a natural tidal pool, a favourite for paddling.
- Explore the dunes. Penhale Sands hides St Piran's Oratory, linked to Cornwall's patron saint.
- Beach bars. A famous bar sits right on the sand, perfect for sunset.
Beaches
Perranporth Beach runs for around three miles at low tide, joining Penhale Sands. Always swim at lifeguarded areas and be aware of rip currents. Nearby Holywell Bay and Trevaunance Cove at St Agnes are worth a visit.
Walks
Walk the coast path south to St Agnes, past old mining ruins and dramatic cliffs – a stunning route. Or cross the dunes north towards Holywell Bay.
Food and drink
Beachside cafés, fish and chips, bakeries and pubs are all within easy reach of the sand.
Getting there and parking
Perranporth is about eight miles south-west of Newquay. The nearest railway stations are Truro and Newquay, with bus links. There are car parks close to the beach.
When to visit
Summer for beach life and surfing. St Piran's Day on 5 March brings celebrations and a procession across the dunes.
