A clifftop village on the north Cornish coast, home to Tintagel Castle, its spectacular footbridge, Merlin's Cave and the legend of King Arthur.
Tintagel is steeped in myth. The ruins of a medieval castle cling to a rocky headland above the Atlantic, linked to the mainland by a dramatic footbridge – and legend says this is where King Arthur was conceived. Whatever you believe, the setting is breathtaking.
Things to do in Tintagel
- Tintagel Castle. Managed by English Heritage, the castle site includes the remains of a 13th-century castle and evidence of an important early medieval settlement. The footbridge across the gorge opened in 2019 and gives incredible views. Book tickets in advance, especially in summer.
- Merlin's Cave. Below the castle, a cave runs right through the headland. It's accessible from the beach at low tide only, so check tide times before you go.
- Old Post Office. A rare 14th-century stone house in the village, cared for by the National Trust.
- St Nectan's Glen. A short drive away, a woodland walk leads to a waterfall and a spiritual, secluded spot.
Beaches
Tintagel Haven, below the castle, is a small cove best seen at low tide. Trebarwith Strand, just south, is a beautiful sandy beach at low tide that disappears completely as the tide comes in – always keep an eye on the water. Bossiney Cove is another small beach nearby.
Walks
The coast path around Tintagel is rugged and spectacular. Walk south to Trebarwith Strand via the clifftop church of St Materiana, or north to Bossiney and Rocky Valley. Paths are steep in places.
Food and drink
The village has pubs, cafés and plenty of pasty shops, with a pub at Trebarwith Strand overlooking the beach.
Getting there and parking
Tintagel is about six miles north-west of Camelford. There's no railway; the nearest station is Bodmin Parkway. Several car parks are in the village, and it's a steep walk down to the castle (a Land Rover shuttle has run in the past – check locally).
When to visit
The castle is open most of the year, and summer is busiest. Visit on a clear day for the views, and come early or late to avoid queues for the bridge.
