Fowey Beaches: Readymoney Cove

Fowey is not a long open-Atlantic surf strip. The beach most visitors mean when they ask for sand near town is Readymoney Cove — a sheltered sandy cove on the Fowey side of the estuary mouth, with harbour traffic and headland views rather than endless dune. This guide is the beach/cove choice in depth. For the wider plan, use our Fowey Cornwall travel guide.

Where Readymoney sits

Readymoney Cove lies on the south-western side of Fowey (Beach Guide postcode PL23 1JH). From the town centre it is commonly reached on foot along the Esplanade — a broadly flat approach many visitors treat as about a ten-minute walk, often manageable with pushchairs when conditions are clear. St Catherine’s Castle and the headland sit above; the cove looks out toward the estuary mouth rather than a wild west-facing surf beach.

It is the planning default if you want a swim or sand-and-sit stop without leaving Fowey for a different bay. If you came hoping for a multi-mile beach parade, reset expectations: Fowey’s gift is the harbour and estuary, with Readymoney as the near-town sand pocket.

What it is like

Expect a sandy cove with a boat-free swimming area and a swimming platform noted on beach directories, plus a slipway for beach users. Facilities listed by The Beach Guide include toilets (including disabled facilities) on a seasonal basis — treat “seasonal” seriously out of peak months and confirm on the day rather than assuming summer kit is open in October.

This is a working estuary setting: you share the wider harbour with boats beyond the swim zone. Keep the day simple — cove time, a headland wander if you have legs, then back into town for food. Midday in July and August can fill the sand quickly; early morning and early evening often feel more like Fowey.

Swimming and safety — no lifeguard

According to The Beach Guide’s Readymoney Cove page, there is no lifeguard service at Readymoney. Take extra care before entering the water and avoid swimming in rough or unfamiliar conditions. Local beach guidance also stresses staying inside marked swim / buoy areas and not treating the harbour beyond the buoy line as a pool.

Check beach signage for water-quality or sewage-alert notices on the day. We do not invent all-clear claims — conditions change with weather and runoff. If you are unsure, stay on the sand: the view of harbour traffic and the headland is still worth the Esplanade walk.

Dogs — check the season rules

The Beach Guide states that dogs are banned between Easter and 30 September. We have not independently confirmed that wording on a Cornwall Council beach byelaw page in this pass, so treat it as directory guidance and confirm on beach signage when you arrive — local notices are what stewards and visitors actually follow.

Some local business pages describe different peak-hour patterns in high summer (for example allowing dogs on paved areas while restricting the sand). When sources disagree, follow the signed rule on the sand that day, keep dogs under control, and bag litter.

Parking for the cove

The Beach Guide notes around 150 unmarked chargeable parking spaces near the cove. Cornwall Council lists Readymoney as a long-stay car park (PL23 1JD) on its Fowey car parks page — that is the practical council-named option if you are driving cove-first. For the wider parking picture (Main, Albert Quay, Caffa Mill, and the “park once” rule), see getting to Fowey.

Tariffs and machine hours are not reproduced here; check live council / on-site payment information. If Readymoney is full on a peak afternoon, it is usually calmer to use Main and walk the Esplanade than to circle the cove repeatedly.

How Readymoney fits a Fowey day

  • Half day: Esplanade walk, swim or sit inside the buoyed area, return via town lanes for lunch.
  • Full day: pair with a morning harbour wander or a short Polruan ferry hop — see Fowey to Polruan ferry and river day — then use the cove when the centre feels busiest.
  • With walks: Covington Woods / St Catherine’s loops start near Readymoney if you want a short headland circuit after a swim; longer Hall Walk detail sits on walks from Fowey.

Families often treat Readymoney as the reset button after hills and ferries: towels down, harbour watching, then a slow walk back. Solo travellers and couples may prefer the quieter edges of the day for the same reason.

For activity-style lists beyond the beach, keep using things to do in Fowey. Soft ranked context lives on pages such as top 10 attractions in Fowey when castle and cove sit in that format. A short destination card is at visit Fowey.
