Known for being the home of Lady Browning and also for its Festival of Arts and Literature in her honour, Fowey has plenty to see and do.
It may be a small town, but if you visit in August, you’ll see just how lively it can get in a town that created its own harbour over time.
A brief history of Fowey
Fowey hugs its own river on the south coast of Cornwall. The natural harbour near the river mouth has lent itself to a history that is littered with stories of battles. At one time, the harbour took in ships with cargoes of tin and china clay that departed for Europe. At other times, fleets of battleships set forth. From traders to pirates to tourists; Fowey has seen it all. It must have been an unforgettable sight to see 47 ships set sail from the harbour in 1347. All looking to cross The Channel and take part in Edward III’s siege of Calais.
Not only has Fowey been home to Lady Browning, but also to Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch. Both authors lived in the ocean walls of this attractive harbour town, and they were reason enough for many to start visiting.
More recently, boats have sailed in and out of Fowey for pleasure rather than business. The people that live and visit this town are now drawn to it only by the art and history that is there. And, of course, the friendly nature of the locals. The car ferry to Bodinnick and the passenger ferry to Polruan are both popular for day trips and there are plenty of stunning views of the Cornish countryside to reward hikers, too.
What to do and where to go
A town of trading and fighting Fowey may have been, but today we see wonderful attractions like the Eden Project. Explore the world’s largest indoor rainforest and enjoy special events. Set your little ones loose in the Minibeast Mansion play tower or explore the many biomes that the Eden Project has to offer.
Alternatively, Fowey Aquarium is always welcoming to visitors. It’s an independent aquarium that showcases marine life that can be found around the Cornish coastline. It’s not the biggest place, but you can see exotic fish, enjoy the feel of the touch pool, or even buy your own fishing gear.
Take a ride on the Polruan Ferry and explore a completely new area. Enjoy winding streets, Polruan Castle, and even a house from the 15th century that is raised above the mouth of the harbour.
